The real luxury of a mountain stay is often found off the slopes: on a terrace, in an outdoor spa, or under the steam of a hammam. Here's why this wellness area, when it's entirely private, changes the nature of a stay at Chalet de la Poirie.
A wellness area isn't just a marketing line on a listing: used well, it reshapes the rhythm of an entire stay. You come back to it every day, morning or evening, alone for a moment or as a group, and it often becomes the memory people talk about when they get home, more than the slope skied or the trail walked.
The outdoor spa, a ritual after skiing or hiking
After a day on the slopes at Gérardmer or La Bresse, or on the trails of the voie verte and the Vosges mid-mountains, nothing beats sliding into the warm water of the outdoor spa. Warm-water immersion is traditionally used to relax muscles worked hard by exercise and encourage more restful sleep at the end of the day; the whirlpool's massage jets add a more targeted effect on the legs and back, particularly welcome after a day's skiing or a long climb on a hike.
Set under a pergola and surrounded by patio heaters, the spa stays comfortable even in the depths of winter, on an 80 m² terrace designed to be used all year round rather than closed up at the first cold snap. It's a contrast that few experiences offer so simply: the crisp Vosges air on your face, snow sometimes falling on the surrounding peaks, and hot water up to your shoulders. It's the moment when you truly unwind, with family or friends, before sitting down to eat.
Sauna and steam room, two ways to relax
The chalet combines two complementary facilities, each with its own sensations. The sauna, on the terrace, heats the air to a high temperature in a dry atmosphere: the intense heat raises body temperature, brings on heavy perspiration and delivers a deep sense of muscular relaxation within minutes. The steam shower upstairs works the opposite way, with humid heat: the steam envelops the body more gradually, clears the airways and leaves the skin feeling softer afterwards.
Alternating between the two over the course of a stay lets you vary the sensation depending on the moment or the season: the sauna in a winter evening for intense heat after the cold outside, the steam room in the morning for a gentle wake-up before heading out to explore the region. Many guests finish their wellness ritual in the whirlpool bath in the upstairs bathroom, its massage jets extending the relaxation one last time before bed.
Building your own ritual: spa, sauna and crisp Vosges air
The principle of alternating heat and fresh air, inherited from Nordic and Central European wellness traditions, comes naturally at the chalet thanks to the immediate proximity of the sauna, the outdoor spa and the crisp Vosges air. Stepping out of the sauna for a moment to breathe the fresh air of the terrace before going back in, or following a spell in the hot spa with a quiet moment wrapped in a bathrobe, are simple habits that many of our guests adopt spontaneously from the very first evening, without having planned it in advance.
There's no set order: some prefer to start with the sauna to relax their muscles before finishing with the spa, others do it the other way round depending on the time of day and the weather. What matters, and it's exactly what a fully private area allows, is being able to build this ritual at your own pace, with no fixed schedule and no waiting behind other guests.

A different experience in every season
The wellness area doesn't feel the same depending on the time of year, and that's exactly what makes it such a strong reason to come back to the chalet across several seasons. In winter, it's the contrast that dominates: stepping out wrapped up warm, crossing a few metres of snow-covered terrace and sliding into the spa's hot water, before heading back in to warm up further still in the sauna. Many of our winter guests consider this moment the high point of their ski stay, even more than the day on the slopes at Gérardmer or La Bresse.
In spring and autumn, the spa and sauna become the natural extension of a day's hiking or cycling on the voie verte: less thermal contrast than in winter, but recovery that's just as welcome after several hours walking in the mid-mountains. In summer, finally, it's often in the late evening, once the heat has dropped, that the spa comes into its own again: a soak under the stars after a day's swimming at the Remiremont lake or Lake Gérardmer, while the barbecue cools down on the terrace.
Why a private wellness area changes everything
In many group accommodations, the spa or sauna is booked in time slots and shared with other guests: thirty or forty-five minutes at a fixed time, often in swimwear in front of strangers, with an obligation to clear out for the next group. Here, because the chalet is let exclusively, the spa, sauna, steam room and whirlpool bath belong to your group alone: no slot to book, no other guests present, no swimsuit to put on in advance so as not to miss your turn. You go barefoot, whenever suits you, in your pyjamas if you like, at 8am just as much as at 11pm after an evening of board games.
That freedom has a real effect on how a stay unfolds: with no time slot or booking, the wellness area becomes a reflex rather than a planned outing. Five minutes alone with a coffee in the morning, or an hour as a group in the evening; that spontaneity makes all the difference compared with a hotel spa that has to be planned the day before.
A wellness area for the whole group, at any hour
With 10 beds spread across two floors, the chalet welcomes families with children just as easily as multigenerational tribes or groups of friends. The wellness area follows the same principle as the rest of the house: nobody shares it with a stranger. For a family with young children, that means being able to enjoy the spa in the evening once the kids are in bed, without arranging last-minute babysitting for a fixed time slot. For a group of friends who came to ski, it means keeping the evening going in the hot water as late as the group likes, with no clock to watch. Pets are welcome, simply let us know when booking, for a wellness stay without leaving anyone behind.
