The short answer: if you are looking for a chalet with a hot tub near Gérardmer, Chalet de la Poirie is in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont, about 25 kilometres and half an hour by road from the centre of Gérardmer and its lake. You rent the whole house, for up to 10 guests, with a heated outdoor hot tub, a sauna cabin, a steam shower and a whirlpool bath reserved for your group alone. The trade-off is that you need a car to get to Gérardmer: neither the lake nor the slopes are within walking distance.

Plenty of listings borrow the name of Gérardmer, the best-known resort in the Vosges, for places that are somewhere else. We would rather say it plainly and give you what you need to decide: real driving times, what is around the chalet, a typical day out, and the price of a stay. Then you can judge whether the compromise suits your group.

Location

Where exactly the chalet is

The chalet is at 815 rue de la Poirie, 88200 Dommartin-lès-Remiremont, right next to the town of Remiremont in the south of the Vosges department. Gérardmer lies to the north-east and La Bresse to the east. On our pages we say the Gérardmer and La Bresse-Hohneck ski areas are "less than 30 kilometres" away: that is true as the crow flies. By road, this is what OpenStreetMap route planning (OSRM engine) gives, without traffic or snow.

In winter, allow extra time: mountain roads are slower in snow, and at weekends the resort car parks fill up early. Some places, on the other hand, are right on the doorstep: the voie verte cycle trail 30 metres away, the shops and Remiremont's lake 2 kilometres away, and the Franould riding farm 2.9 kilometres away. All these distances are listed on the area page.

The trade-off

Staying outside Gérardmer: what you gain and what you lose

What you lose is simple. You cannot stroll down to the lake in the evening, you cannot click into your skis at the front door, and dinner in Gérardmer means someone stays sober to drive. If your holiday is mostly about wandering along the lakeshore, a place in town will be more convenient.

What you gain often matters more to a group. First, the whole house: two apartments, on the ground floor and upstairs, always rented together, with two fitted kitchens, two bathrooms and 10 beds across 115 m² of living space. Second, a wellness area you share with no one: the hot tub under the pergola on the 80 m² terrace, kept warm by patio heaters, the sauna cabin on the same terrace, and the steam shower and whirlpool bath upstairs, with no time slots and no extra charge. Third, a central base: Gérardmer and La Bresse are both less than 45 minutes' drive away, and Remiremont, 3 kilometres away, has the railway station, the Tuesday market and all the shops.

There is the quiet, too. The chalet is a family home, not a party venue: you come back after a day's skiing or hiking for a hot soak and dinner at home, well away from the bustle of a resort in high season.

Who is this choice right for? Groups and families travelling with one or two cars, who want to alternate between Gérardmer and La Bresse for skiing or hiking, and who would rather cook, soak and spend the evening together in their own house than eat out in town. If your stay is mostly about evenings in Gérardmer and car-free strolls along the lake, a place in town will suit you better, and we would rather tell you so before you book.

A typical day

A day in Gérardmer from the chalet

In winter, leave around 9 am to be on the slopes when the lifts open. The Gérardmer ski area has 22 runs and 35 km of slopes, with free access to its play areas and sledging area, according to its operator, which plans to open the 2026–27 season from Saturday 19 December 2026, snow permitting. In the late afternoon, half an hour's drive takes you back to the chalet, the hot tub and the sauna. Families torn between the two resorts will find a comparison in our guide to skiing near La Bresse and Gérardmer.

In summer, the day revolves around the lake. Lake Gérardmer is the largest natural lake in the Vosges, at 660 metres above sea level, according to the Gérardmer Hautes Vosges tourist office, which also lists the lakes and waterfalls nearby. Footpaths, beaches and lakeside restaurants easily fill a day, before you head back to enjoy the terrace and the barbecue under the pergola.

In spring and autumn, Gérardmer becomes one stop among others: a morning by the lake, lunch, then the Route des Crêtes or a hike. All our ideas for outings, season by season, are in our year-round guide to things to do in the Vosges.

Without the car

What to do around the chalet without getting back in the car

On days when nobody wants to drive, everything starts at the door. The Hautes-Vosges voie verte passes 30 metres from the chalet: a tarmac trail laid on 55 km of old railway lines, running up the Moselle valley to Bussang and the Moselotte valley to Cornimont, according to the Remiremont tourist office. The national greenway association AF3V notes that the two branches split precisely at Dommartin-lès-Remiremont.

Remiremont's lake, 2 kilometres away, is good for a swim in fine weather, and the Franould riding farm, 2.9 kilometres away, offers horse and pony rides. Le Karélian restaurant is 900 metres away, and L'Atelier, La Belle Marée, La Quarterelle and Le Clos Heurtebise are about 3 kilometres away. For groceries, the supermarkets are 2 kilometres away and Remiremont's market is held on Tuesdays.

To compare with a place in Gérardmer itself, ask every host the same questions: is the price for the whole house or per person, is the hot tub included and reserved for your group, how many real beds are there, and which fees are added? Our answers are gathered in our private hot tub chalet checklist.

Practicalities
