Yes, you can rent a whole chalet for a ski trip in the Vosges without staying in Gérardmer or La Bresse: Chalet de la Poirie is in Dommartin-lès-Remiremont, under 30 km from both resorts, sleeps a maximum of 10 and has its own spa and sauna for when you come off the slopes. Outside New Year, a night for the entire chalet costs 110 € to 200 € depending on the dates, before extras.

This isn't a rerun of our season-by-season activity guide. It covers what actually decides a ski booking: the official figures for both resorts, the key dates for winter 2026-27, three budgets worked out to the cent, and the questions worth asking before you book any ski chalet, ours included.

The resorts

La Bresse or Gérardmer: the official figures

Both resorts are under 30 kilometres from the chalet, so you can pick one each morning depending on the weather and the mood of the group. Here is what their official websites state, checked on 1 October 2026.

How to choose? La Bresse-Hohneck has the most runs and lifts, and its 360 snow cannons matter in a range where natural snow varies a lot from one winter to the next. Gérardmer pairs a linked alpine area, La Mauselaine, with a separate cross-country area at Les Bas-Rupts, which helps when not everyone in the group skis the same way. From the chalet there's no need to commit for the whole week: decide the night before, with the snow report in hand.

These are full-season figures. Early and late in the winter only part of the area is open, so check the snow page of La Bresse-Hohneck or Gérardmer on the day before you set off.

Calendar

Winter 2026-27: the dates that matter

Two calendars shape a ski trip here: the resorts' and the French school holidays, which decide when the slopes and the accommodation fill up. The holiday dates below come from the official calendar of the French Ministry of Education (schools break up on the Saturday and go back on the Monday).

  • La Bresse-Hohneck opening: announced for Saturday 19 December 2026, snow permitting. Gérardmer had not published its date as of 1 October.
  • Christmas holidays, all of France: Saturday 19 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027.
  • Winter holidays, zone C (Paris region, Montpellier, Toulouse): 6 to 22 February 2027.
  • Zone A (including Lyon, Dijon, Besançon, Grenoble, Bordeaux): 13 February to 1 March 2027.
  • Zone B (including Nancy-Metz, which covers the Vosges, plus Strasbourg, Reims, Lille): 20 February to 8 March 2027.

The takeaway: from 20 to 28 February, zones A and B are off at the same time, and nearly every school district around the Vosges is on holiday. That is naturally the busiest stretch, for the resorts and for places to stay. The quieter windows are 6 to 12 February, when only zone C is off, and the first week of March, when only zone B still is.

To be clear about the chalet: as of 1 October 2026, 25 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 is already booked. For January, February and March, the availability calendar on our booking page is synced with our own diary, so trust it rather than this article.

On the price grid, February sits in the middle band (130 € a night midweek, 165 € on Friday and Saturday, 2-night minimum), and the Christmas holidays in the holiday band (160 € and 200 €, 3-night minimum). For a week in the February school holidays, we confirm the exact rate and minimum stay in our reply, within 24 hours.

Budget

What does a ski stay at the chalet cost? Three worked budgets

You rent the whole chalet, and the nightly rate is the same for 2 to 4 guests. On top of that come 30 € per night for each guest from the 5th to the 8th, a 100 € cleaning fee per stay and the local tourist tax of 1.60 € per person per night. The totals below include all of that; they leave out only a pet, if you bring one (25 € per stay), and the 300 € deposit, which is refunded after your stay.

Sample budgets for a ski stay at the chalet
Stay4 guests6 guests8 guests
January weekend2 nights, Friday and Saturday, 140 € a night392.80 €98.20 € each519.20 €86.53 € each645.60 €80.70 € each
Midweek in January4 nights, Sunday to Thursday, 110 € a night565.60 €141.40 € each818.40 €136.40 € each1,071.20 €133.90 € each

Worked out from the practical information price grid: nights + 30 € per night for guests 5 to 8 + 100 € cleaning + tourist tax of 1.60 € per person per night.

For 9 or 10 guests, the published grid doesn't give the supplement, so please ask for a quote through the booking form with the exact number of people.

Two things stand out. First, the bigger the group, the lower the price per head: with 8 of you, a January weekend works out at about 81 € each for two nights, linen, cleaning, spa and sauna included. Second, Sunday to Thursday nights are charged at the weekday rate, so skiing midweek costs less per night. Our article on what a spa weekend at the chalet really costs runs through more combinations, including outside the ski season.

Planning

Weekend or full week: planning your ski days

Check-in is from 5 pm with self check-in, and the entry details are sent to you before you arrive. That means you can finish work, drive over on Friday evening and find the house ready, with no key handover to time. Saturday and Sunday are for the slopes; check-out is by 11 am.

A calendar tip: Sunday night is charged at the weekday rate. In January, adding a third night to a weekend costs 110 € for the chalet, plus 30 € per guest beyond the 4th and the tourist tax, and buys you a second full ski day without driving home that evening.

In the evening, the house is set up for a group coming back tired. The hot tub and sauna sit on the 80 m² terrace under a pergola with patio heaters, and the upstairs bathroom has a steam shower and a whirlpool bath, so everyone gets a turn without queuing. Two bathrooms, one per floor, ease the rush for the showers, and the two fitted kitchens make a proper dinner for 10 easy without going out again. The full wellness set-up is described on our spa and wellness page.

Getting there

Driving in winter: tyres, parking and the train

From 1 November to 31 March, the Vosges prefecture requires winter tyres, or snow chains or snow socks carried in the car, in certain mountain municipalities. Dommartin-lès-Remiremont is on the prefecture's list, as are Gérardmer and La Bresse, so make sure every car in your group is equipped.

At the chalet, the private, secure car park has 5 spaces, so a group can come in several cars. In Gérardmer, the resort advertises 1,200 free parking spaces and a free shuttle to the La Mauselaine car park during the February school holidays, only when the lifts are running.

No car? Remiremont station is 3 kilometres from the chalet, and Taxi Chol (+33 6 08 43 89 13) covers the area. For getting up to the resorts every day, though, a car is by far the easiest option. All the access details are in our practical information.

Before you book

Ski chalet in the Vosges: a pre-booking checklist

Ski chalet listings in the Vosges tend to look alike. These are the questions that separate them, with our answers.

  • Real distance to the slopes: under 30 km from La Bresse-Hohneck and Gérardmer. This is not a ski-in, ski-out chalet and we don't sell it as one.
  • Real capacity: 10 people, never more, with 2 double bedrooms, 1 XXL bunk bed (two 90 x 200 cm berths) in the living room and 2 large sofa beds.
  • Whole chalet or shared: the whole chalet. Both floors are always let together, with no other guests.
  • Hot tub usable in winter: yes, on the heated terrace, with no time slots and no sharing. Sauna on the terrace, steam shower and whirlpool bath upstairs.
  • Late arrival after the drive: check-in from 5 pm, self check-in.
  • What's provided: bed linen for every bed, Wi-Fi, a baby cot and high chair, shower gel and shampoo.
  • Cancelling if the snow fails: free up to 14 days before arrival, 50% refund between 14 and 5 days, nothing after that. Watch the snow reports before the 14-day mark.
  • Bringing the dog: pets are welcome, just let us know when you book (25 € per stay).
